Misconception of "Feminism"

In western society, the concept of feminism has been so prevalent that many people have begun to overlook the significance of this term. Feminism is often mistaken as “hatred towards men” or simply a movement to “discourage” men, when in reality the point of feminism is the opposite: to promote equal opportunity for both women and men. Meanwhile, in the east, the concept of feminism is very seldom mentioned. As a result, people are not familiar with the idea and thus very often, feminists in the society are easily perceived as aggressive and unconventional. Hence, our campaign is hugely inspired to fill up this void in our society and hopefully alter misconceptions surrounding the topic of feminism, as we believe this is reasonably an indispensable part of our advocacy.

I think the word is really difficult because it seems to inherently address a preferential treatment of the feminine over the masculine because it has the feminine in the word, and I think that’s a real oversight and misunderstanding. Instead, feminism is about gender equality, across the board. This isn’t just girls are better than boys, boys are better than girls. This is just everyone deserves a fair chance.

Our International Vision

FeMILY's goal is to spread the correct understanding and awareness of gender equality around the world. Where better to advocate for women’s rights and inspire young feminists than at all-girls schools?

The founders of the FeMILY campaign all have backgrounds in Asia and has experienced the impact of gender inequality personally. As we discover the huge gap between how often feminism is talked about in Asia and in North America, we found ourselves obligated to work globally to change the status quo of gender roles wherever deficient. From the “Me Too” movement to the “He for She” campaign, we recognized that the change we fight for can only happen if a group of determined activists work together to educate the crowd. Although there are plenty of international campaigns that focus on the issue, we noticed that many people around us still think of themselves unassociated with this severe problem. As a famous quote suggests, “none of us are equal until all of us are equal”, the FeMILY campaign strives to start our influence from our school communities to eventually, the public eye.

Hong Kong Chapter

FEMILY Hong Kong is established in early 2018. The idea of establishing FEMILY comes from President Jasmine Lai and Chairman Dorothy Poon, which both of them are originally from Hong Kong. Using their connections and resources, they quickly established a Hong Kong team consisted of 6 outstanding leaders in their community. On the other hand, the opportunity that Hong Kong provides is incredible; being one of the most globalized metropolitan cities in Asia, Hong Kong would be a suitable starting point for FEMILY’s involvements in Asia, with the mission of raising awareness on the significance of gender equality.
